I am pleased to have chosen SEEM as my major course for my undergraduate studies. Unlike other engineering majors, SEEM has provided me with a unique opportunity to acquire knowledge in both business and engineering. Through this major, I have gained a solid understanding of business principles relating to finance and management as well as engineering concepts such as design, development, and problem-solving. This major has also equipped me with a diverse skill set that has transformed me into a well-rounded individual and provided me with flexibility to work in various jobs. I am now confident in my ability to adapt to new situations, think critically, and solve complex problems from multiple perspectives.
Studying at SEEM has been a wonderful and fruitful experience. The department has been helpful in providing me with all the necessary resources to facilitate my studies. SEEM offers a wide range of courses, which has provided me with broad exposure and equipped me with both technical skills and business knowledge. The programme also taught me how to put my knowledge into practice. I learned how to use mathematical models and methodologies in business systems to improve efficiency and efficacy. Through computer and mathematics courses, I learned how to evaluate data, find solutions, and solve complex problems. I also honed my problem-solving skills, analytical abilities, and logical reasoning skills. Overall, my experience at SEEM has laid a strong foundation for my career.
As a sophomore at SEEM, I am grateful that I decided to pursue this major. My name is Supakorn. First of all, I would like to express my gratitude to the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management for my scholarship. I really appreciate it. I am currently in my third year as an international student majoring in SEEM. I have found many of the courses and subjects to be both interesting and essential, ranging from probability, statistics, operations research, service management, logistics, and supply chain to quality control, among others. The content has been both relevant and up to date, allowing me to apply it to present-day situations. I have also been impressed by the kindness and friendliness of the professors, tutors, and staff. Whenever I have encountered a problem, they have always been available and willing to assist me. Overall, my experience studying SEEM has been positive, and I am grateful that I selected this major.
During my first year at SEEM, I focused on developing a strong background in both core engineering principles and management practices. I took courses in subjects such as calculus, physics, and computer programming, which helped me improve my scientific reasoning and logical analysis capabilities. Whenever I encountered questions that I could not answer, I would send an email to the teaching assistant or visit the professor’s office and ask for help. My name is Galym Torebayev, and I am a sophomore currently studying SEEM. A year ago, I had to make a difficult decision between computer science and SEEM as my major. I reviewed the courses offered by these majors and discovered that both included programming-related courses. However, I discovered that SEEM offered not only coding courses but also mathematics, finance, analytics, and business-related courses. Therefore, as someone who has always desired to be at the intersection of business and technology, I chose SEEM and have had no regrets ever since.
As a SEEM student, I have learned how to use cutting-edge technologies, such as blockchains, artificial intelligence, and machine learning, and apply them in finance and business. I have also enjoyed both finance- and mathematics-related courses. I am grateful to the SEEM professors for enhancing my understanding of the subject matter. Overall, studying SEEM has been a challenging but rewarding experience, and I believe it will lead to numerous exciting career opportunities.
As a sophomore in the SEEM department, I have found the programme to be an exceptional academic pursuit. The weekly professional workshops and seminars related to systems engineering have provided me with exceptional opportunities to learn from senior industry practitioners representing renowned companies such as Amazon Web Services, AlipayHK, Google Cloud, and Manulife. The SEEM programme also provides opportunities for summer research and internships in diverse fields, further enhancing the programme’s value for students.

The programme’s comprehensive curriculum has provided me with a well-rounded education, equipping me with the skills and knowledge necessary for future career success. The professors have been exceptional mentors, challenging and inspiring me to realise my full potential. Despite the pandemic, SEEM went above and beyond to ensure that we received the best education possible. Even though we were physically separated, I still felt connected to the SEEM department and received the same level of support and guidance as if I were present in person. Systems engineering and engineering management is a vast and diverse field of study. My primary focus is on financial engineering, which prepares individuals for the era of digital finance. As a student of financial engineering, I have gained experience in programming languages such as Python and R as well as financial software such as MATLAB, which can be applied to price, model, and analyse financial products. This field of study has also honed my practical skills. During my final-year project, I was able to apply what I had learned and analyse the current financial environment, read literature on the most advanced ideas, and offer my own insights. Overall, SEEM has considerably broadened my future career options.
Time flies, and I am very happy to see that my “mother department” SEEM has stepped into its 30th anniversary! I received my B.Eng., M.Phil. and Ph.D. all from SEEM (1993-2002). During my Ph.D. study, with the support of my advisors Prof. Duan Li and Prof. Houmin Yan, I received the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fellowships twice, obtained research paper awards from ACM(HK) and IEE(HK), served as a consultant in e-jing technologies, and participated in the Asia Technology Initiative (ATI) and smart home project at Stanford University. From 2001 to 2004, I also served as an instructor and then an assistant professor at SEEM. I am truly grateful for the opportunities that SEEM granted me. The education experience was world-class and SEEM is always in my heart.
After leaving SEEM, I had taught at PolyU for 17 years, where I was a recipient of the prestigious President’s Award for Excellent Performance and Achievement. In winter 2021, upon invitation, I joined National Taiwan University’s business school as a Yushan Fellow and Professor. I am currently serving the profession as the Co-Editor-in-Chief of Transportation Research Part E, Department Editor of IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, Senior Editor of Production and Operations Management, and Associate Editor of Decision Sciences, etc. I am also a member of the engineering panel in the Research Grants Council (HK).
Currently, I am working in London as a senior developer at Alibaba UK. I am responsible for part of the Alipay B2B transaction functionalities.
After graduating from SEEM in 2012, I worked in different places, such as Hong Kong, mainland China, Germany, and the UK. My IT skills have provided me with great mobility to work around the globe. I am grateful for the training provided by SEEM, which helped me build a solid foundation for my IT career. Even though I have graduated 10 years, I still use the IT knowledge I learned from SEEM in my daily work.

I am the Founder and Director of Andrew Found Limited, a recruitment agency specializing in IT talents sourcing. The SEEM program has grown me as an all-rounder in the dynamic world nowadays. I am grateful for the technical know-how and business acumen provided by SEEM, which are the foundation to become a professional in the IT and the business world.
It was a great experience for me to study at SEEM. The programme designed a wide range of subjects for undergraduate students to learn. The department also provided resources that helped students with their academic and career development.
After graduating from SEEM in 2018, I joined the Securities Lending Technology team at Goldman Sachs. I work in a dynamic trading environment in the front office, and my job is to design and build technical solutions for the securities lending business.

I am Huanan Zhang, currently an Assistant Professor at the Leeds School of Business, University of Colorado Boulder. The four-year undergraduate study at SEEM was a wonderful journey for me. I gained a solid foundation for my career development and the faculty members in SEEM were extremely helpful in my graduate application. I am grateful for all the knowledge I learned and all the help I received from here.
